FIVE MUST-SEE CASTLES IN NORTH UK

Are you looking to step back in time on your next trip?
Adding a day out to one of the many beautiful castles we have listed below, will not only have you feeling like royalty wandering round the halls and gardens but is a fun way to learn more about the areas history and what it may have looked like many years ago.

From family days out, adults only or dog friendly, there is a monument to fit every need, so if you’re considering exploring somewhere special on your next adventure, check out our list below of the five castles here at Hadrian Motorhomes we think are must-sees!

First up we have Muncaster Castle in Ravenglass, situated on the border of England and Scotland. Whilst the castle is still partially occupied by the same family that have owned the property since 1208, there is also a rumored resident ghost that wanders the halls after nightfall. After exploring the magnificent architecture, you can spend time wandering around the 77 acres of tranquil gardens, visit the owl sanctuary or get lost in the fun maze.

Next, Sizergh Castle, was gifted to the National Trust in 1950 but is still occupied by the Strickland family. The house is adorned with beautiful furniture and centuries old portraits. The stunning Dutch gardens are filled with multi-coloured blossoms and fresh produce that is used withing the on-site café all year round. The garden plant donation stalls are also a wonderful place to purchase a part of the gardens to take home with you, whether that be some of our fresh fruit and veg or a posy of sweet peas.

Over to the Yorkshire coast we find Scarborough Castle, once used as a Roman signal station due to it being the only place in town that you are able to see both the north and south bays of Scarborough. After taking in the wonderful history of this war enduring architecture, you can visit the café for a quiet bite to eat or a simple cup of coffee and enjoy the surrounding views of the castle.

Standing guard across the Northumberland coastline is Bamburgh Castle, spanning over nine acres and is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. After purchasing the castle in 1894, William George Armstrong, a visionary inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist decided he wanted to transform the building into his own vision. He adorned the walls and rooms with his own unique art collection that he felt brought joy to his life. In more modern times, the grounds have been used for various famous films and are also for open air events. At the end of the day you can finish your tour of these historic halls by taking in the idyllic views of the coastline, a photo worthy view for sure.

Lastly, we have Lindisfarne Castle, nestled away on Holy Island, near Berwick-Upon-Tweed and only accessible at low tide via a causeway or by a boat trip. To see something truly special, seeing the castle at night under the Limelight installation by British art duo Heinrich and Palmer creates a magical vision that appears to be straight from a story book; the installations were imagined by the pair as to highlight the elemental wonders that surround the grounds, it is an absolute must see!

A DOG FRIENDLY HOLIDAY

For many, being able to take their beloved fur babies on holiday is essential and here at Hadrian Motorhomes, we believe you should be able to have your whole family with you on every adventure.
Along with being able to offer dog friendly motorhomes, we also wanted to share some of our favourite places that you can go and stay, whilst never leaving your best friend’s side.

A great place to start is English Heritage they have over 80 locations around the UK, including some beautiful places in the North and most of them are dog friendly. You can book to visit any of their venues online and can even filter your search to only find the ones that allow your furry pal to join you.

We of course recommend visiting Housestead’s Roman Fort – Hadrian’s Wall, here you can wander round the barracks and hospital whilst taking in the incredible scenery that engulfs the entire ancient fortress. An educational and fun day out for all the family!

For a completely breathtaking day out, visit Belsay Hall Castle & Gardens; the Grade 1 listed gardens are straight from a fairytale, it is influenced by Sir Charles Monck’s travels in the Mediterranean and has its own microclimate to allow these exotic plants to grow out of their natural environment. This idyllic wonderland is a photographers dream and would make the ideal day trip for a romantic day out alongside your fur pal.

Or lastly, you could spend the day like a king and queen, wandering around Warkworth Castle & Hermitage. This hilltop fortress is steeped in history and stories to tell, whilst being surrounded by river and coastal views, there is something to keep everyone happy.

When looking for places to park up your Hadrian Motorhome and settle in, we have found a couple of sites near the above places, however you can find dog friendly caravan sites across the country.

Firstly, we have Hadrian’s Wall Campsite, a family run site that welcomes families of all sizes along with their beloved pup. This site sits only 20 minutes from Hadrian’s Wall and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, the park also contains a campsite shop and café.

For a beach side experience, Sandy Bay Holiday Park is the perfect place. You can visit the Boathouse Bar & Restaurant for a delicious sit-down meal or grab something on the go with their Fish ‘n’ Chip takeaway and enjoy it sat on the beach watching the waves. The holiday park also has an indoor pool and amusement arcade to keep you entertained all day.

If you are looking to book a motorhome holiday with us but aren’t sure where to go or the best places to visit, simply get in touch and we can advise you plenty of places that will keep you busy throughout. A LONG WEEKEND IN SCOTLAND

Thinking of cancelling your summer holidays and to just stay at home?
Don’t let the worlds restrictions cancel your summer; why not take a road trip of a lifetime around scenic Scotland.
The endless picturesque sites scattered around the Scottish countryside are joined by its charming cities steeped in history, making it the ideal place for a summer escape.

Here at Hadrian Motorhomes, we have put together a guide that will have you making the most of your weekend adventure.

Let us start with the city that is a must for anyone to see, Edinburgh. The Roman founded city is full of history and beautiful buildings; however, this really is the city to suit everyone; split into the old town and new town, there is something for everyone to do.

Whilst in Edinburgh, the castle is a must-see, built on top of a 700-year-old extinct volcano, this architectural masterpiece is a perfect day trip, whether that’s for a romantic stroll as a couple or to entertain the kids on a family day out. We recommend booking your tickets well in advance especially during school holidays to avoid disappointment.

Now one for all of the Harry Potter fans; Edinburgh is one of the many Scottish locations that is associated with the magical world of Hogwarts and is actually where J.K.Rowling spent most of her time writing the first books of the series. The Elephant House Café is said to have been one of Rowling’s favourite places to sit and write whilst being inspired by the winding cobbled streets just outside her window seat.

Within the city, you can find many underground bars, selling anything from on tap beers to cocktail slushies. The Devil’s Advocate bar in Old Town creates beautiful cocktails and is well worth a visit on your trip!

After all the excitement of a city, we have a mini paradise nestled into the west coast of Scotland.
Oban also known as the ‘Little Bay’ is truly the most idyllic location for a quiet getaway. Travelling from the entertainment of Edinburgh will only take around 2-3 hours, and there are so many camping spots that you can park your Hadrian Motorhome in before going off to explore. Oban Caravan Park is a beautiful spot to stay whilst in Oban, you will wake up surrounded in scenic beauty, so we highly recommend a picnic breakfast outside to take in those views before starting your day.

For a chilled-out afternoon stroll, Oban offers all the amenities you may need to enjoy yourself; you will find the local distillery at the center of the town where you are able to try the 14-year-old West Highland Malt Whiskey, or why not visit Oban’s very own chocolate factory and shop and indulge yourself in coffees and home baking. You will find lots of fun places to explore during your time in Oban and will be able to fill your days with different activities to please everyone.

There are endless beautiful spots to visit across Scotland, and we will be putting together more guides to help you put together your ideal getaway. We love seeing your memories being made whilst on a Hadrian Motorhome vacation and know that once you have experienced the escapism of a road trip you will want to do it year after year!

HONEYMOONS WITH HADRIAN MOTORHOMES

Wedding season is finally back!
And what could be more exciting then planning your big day? Well, the honeymoon of course!

After all the stress of planning for months on end, a calm escape for the pair of you will be exactly what you need to start your married life.

Having a picnic in the wilderness, walking across Northern hidden shores, lazy mornings to cosy up together; here at Hadrian Motorhomes, we have put together some of the most idyllic spots that will make your honeymoon the adventure of a lifetime.

Lake District National Park –
The biggest national park in England offers some of the most stunning scenery, with endless activity options, whether you prefer a simple stroll or a treetop adventure there is something for every couple to enjoy. You can book in activities through the Lake District ‘website’ where you can find plenty of information on everything you will be able to do on your visit.

For the ultimate romantic evening, we recommend finding a quiet spot and staying until nightfall, pack a date night hamper and cuddle up under a blanket, as the Lake District has some of the darkest skies in the country, you will be illuminated by the moon and all the constellations, it’s a star gazers dream!

York –
A city full of history, a Roman built empire that still holds much of the original architecture throughout its streets. A wander down the Shambles will take you back in time, with some of the buildings dating as far back as the 1300’s; and whilst the original butchers’ shops that would line the street may have disappeared, they have been replaced with quaint coffee shops and small businesses, perfect for a quiet afternoon.

Also, if beautiful buildings are something you enjoy, York is a must. Along with the charming streets, everywhere you look there are picturesque views.
The York Minster, however, needs to be top of the list, as the largest Gothic Church in Northern Europe, it holds the biggest expanse of Medieval stained glass in the world; and if that isn’t beautiful enough for you, you can venture up the 275 stairs that take you to a breathtaking view of the cities landscapes.

When looking for somewhere to park up your Hadrian Motorhome, we recommend the ‘Burton Constable Holiday Park’. As it is catered more to couples than families you will experience a tranquil stay and with its own bar onsite with connecting beer garden you can spend evenings enjoying an uninterrupted date night.

Northumberland Coast –

Now for the beaches. Take a trip down the Northumberland Coast; as it was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1958, this 40 mile stretch of picturesque coastline would be ideal for your honeymoon vacation. Within this coastline are many scenic areas that you could visit, Holy Island being one that we would love to recommend.
To get to Holy Island you must wait for a low tide and go by the Northumberland County Council recommended times to make sure you get across safely!
To experience the island at a quieter time, you can also arrive to the island via boat, this tour by ‘Billy Shiels Boat Trips’ takes you around the Farne Islands to view grey seals and sea birds, to then sail over to Holy Island where you may even spot a dolphin or two on the way. Once at the island you will have your time filled with plenty to do including Lindisfarne Castle, a now ‘National Trust’ owned property, this hotspot on the island was built in the 1500’s and sits on volcanic rock. After you have had time to explore the island you will be taken back by boat to shore, just in time to settle down for some dinner together.
