FIVE MUST-SEE CASTLES IN NORTH UK

Are you looking to step back in time on your next trip?
Adding a day out to one of the many beautiful castles we have listed below, will not only have you feeling like royalty wandering round the halls and gardens but is a fun way to learn more about the areas history and what it may have looked like many years ago.

From family days out, adults only or dog friendly, there is a monument to fit every need, so if you’re considering exploring somewhere special on your next adventure, check out our list below of the five castles here at Hadrian Motorhomes we think are must-sees!

First up we have Muncaster Castle in Ravenglass, situated on the border of England and Scotland. Whilst the castle is still partially occupied by the same family that have owned the property since 1208, there is also a rumored resident ghost that wanders the halls after nightfall. After exploring the magnificent architecture, you can spend time wandering around the 77 acres of tranquil gardens, visit the owl sanctuary or get lost in the fun maze.

Next, Sizergh Castle, was gifted to the National Trust in 1950 but is still occupied by the Strickland family. The house is adorned with beautiful furniture and centuries old portraits. The stunning Dutch gardens are filled with multi-coloured blossoms and fresh produce that is used withing the on-site café all year round. The garden plant donation stalls are also a wonderful place to purchase a part of the gardens to take home with you, whether that be some of our fresh fruit and veg or a posy of sweet peas.

Over to the Yorkshire coast we find Scarborough Castle, once used as a Roman signal station due to it being the only place in town that you are able to see both the north and south bays of Scarborough. After taking in the wonderful history of this war enduring architecture, you can visit the café for a quiet bite to eat or a simple cup of coffee and enjoy the surrounding views of the castle.

Standing guard across the Northumberland coastline is Bamburgh Castle, spanning over nine acres and is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country. After purchasing the castle in 1894, William George Armstrong, a visionary inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist decided he wanted to transform the building into his own vision. He adorned the walls and rooms with his own unique art collection that he felt brought joy to his life. In more modern times, the grounds have been used for various famous films and are also for open air events. At the end of the day you can finish your tour of these historic halls by taking in the idyllic views of the coastline, a photo worthy view for sure.

Lastly, we have Lindisfarne Castle, nestled away on Holy Island, near Berwick-Upon-Tweed and only accessible at low tide via a causeway or by a boat trip. To see something truly special, seeing the castle at night under the Limelight installation by British art duo Heinrich and Palmer creates a magical vision that appears to be straight from a story book; the installations were imagined by the pair as to highlight the elemental wonders that surround the grounds, it is an absolute must see!

A LONG WEEKEND IN SCOTLAND

Thinking of cancelling your summer holidays and to just stay at home?
Don’t let the worlds restrictions cancel your summer; why not take a road trip of a lifetime around scenic Scotland.
The endless picturesque sites scattered around the Scottish countryside are joined by its charming cities steeped in history, making it the ideal place for a summer escape.

Here at Hadrian Motorhomes, we have put together a guide that will have you making the most of your weekend adventure.

Let us start with the city that is a must for anyone to see, Edinburgh. The Roman founded city is full of history and beautiful buildings; however, this really is the city to suit everyone; split into the old town and new town, there is something for everyone to do.

Whilst in Edinburgh, the castle is a must-see, built on top of a 700-year-old extinct volcano, this architectural masterpiece is a perfect day trip, whether that’s for a romantic stroll as a couple or to entertain the kids on a family day out. We recommend booking your tickets well in advance especially during school holidays to avoid disappointment.

Now one for all of the Harry Potter fans; Edinburgh is one of the many Scottish locations that is associated with the magical world of Hogwarts and is actually where J.K.Rowling spent most of her time writing the first books of the series. The Elephant House Café is said to have been one of Rowling’s favourite places to sit and write whilst being inspired by the winding cobbled streets just outside her window seat.

Within the city, you can find many underground bars, selling anything from on tap beers to cocktail slushies. The Devil’s Advocate bar in Old Town creates beautiful cocktails and is well worth a visit on your trip!

After all the excitement of a city, we have a mini paradise nestled into the west coast of Scotland.
Oban also known as the ‘Little Bay’ is truly the most idyllic location for a quiet getaway. Travelling from the entertainment of Edinburgh will only take around 2-3 hours, and there are so many camping spots that you can park your Hadrian Motorhome in before going off to explore. Oban Caravan Park is a beautiful spot to stay whilst in Oban, you will wake up surrounded in scenic beauty, so we highly recommend a picnic breakfast outside to take in those views before starting your day.

For a chilled-out afternoon stroll, Oban offers all the amenities you may need to enjoy yourself; you will find the local distillery at the center of the town where you are able to try the 14-year-old West Highland Malt Whiskey, or why not visit Oban’s very own chocolate factory and shop and indulge yourself in coffees and home baking. You will find lots of fun places to explore during your time in Oban and will be able to fill your days with different activities to please everyone.

There are endless beautiful spots to visit across Scotland, and we will be putting together more guides to help you put together your ideal getaway. We love seeing your memories being made whilst on a Hadrian Motorhome vacation and know that once you have experienced the escapism of a road trip you will want to do it year after year!
