VISIT WHITBY

Here at Hadrian, we love hearing about all of the amazing places you visit when on your travels in our motorhomes. We also have ben enjoying putting travel inspiration onto our social media pages every week to help anyone that isn’t sure where to go when booking a road trip around the North UK.

Today we wanted to focus on the beautiful harbour town of Whitby. Known for many different things, Whitby hosts an array of places and activities to suit everyone. We know it can be hard to find places to visit that will engage all members of the family, but with the worlds best fish and chips, Whitby may be the answer!

For our gothic and literature fans, the atmospheric Whitby Abbey is a picturesque piece of history that was inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The first Abbey was originally founded in 657AD by the Saxon King of Northumbria, you can find digital reconstructions and learn about the daily lives of the Monks who once inhabited the later Abbey in the Interactive Visitor Centre. You can even walk up the 199 stairs within the Abby to reach the breathtaking panoramic views, an absolute must-see when visiting the town.

If you fancy getting your sea legs in action, then why not take a coastal cruise, these are a great way to do some whale watching and take in the coast skyline. We recommend the sunset cruise for the romantics out there, a completely magical way to take in the sun’s final few minutes of the day, and definitely photo worthy. On the coastal cruises you can also go on a fishing trip, these are family friendly and last around two-three hours, an ideal way to create some family memories over an afternoon.

For the gin lovers, Whitby is home to its very own distillery that holds the areas signature ingredients at its heart “our signature botanicals: heather foraged from the North York Moors, sugar kelp and local honey, each selected to champion one element of the North Yorkshire coastline” they now have an extensive library of flavours for all taste buds. You can purchase Whitby Gin in many shops around the town and keep yourself topped up when you get back home by ordering online.

A great way to spend a quiet afternoon is to visit all of the charismatic independent shops, from jewellery to arts and crafts inspired by the idyllic scenery, there are many wonderful places to see and maybe treat yourself to a couple of souvenirs. To finish off the afternoon, take a wander to the coastline and grab the best choice for dinner and Whitby’s famous food – a classic fish and chips, said to be the best in the world, this iconic British beach food will be the perfect way to end your day.

We will recommend many more places to venture to on your travels on our blog, so if you enjoy a trip to Whitby from our recommendations then check out our other posts for more inspiration.
